탈리스 스콜라스의 녹음은 몬테베르디 이전 시대, 르네상스 음악에 집중되어 있습니다만 이번 녹음은 여러 모로 크나큰 예외가 됩니다......





어떤 점에서 예외인고 하니,

1. 1944년생 현대 음악가 존 태브너John Tavener의 음악을 노래했다는 거, 이거이 가장 큽니다!!! 주의해야 할 것은 영국 르네상스의 대가 1490년생 존 태버너John Taverner와 혼동하기 쉽다는 건데, 스펠링을 잘 들여다보면 박찬호(CHPark)와 박세리(S.Pak)만큼의 차이를 알아보실 수 있습니다ㅎㅎㅎ.

2. 탈리스 스콜라스의 레퍼토리는 주로 영국, 플랑드르, 이탈리아, 이베리아 등 서유럽의 종교음악이었던 반면, 이번 판은 그리스 정교회의 전통을 따른 음악을 노래합니다. 작곡가인 존 태브너가 커리어 중간에 러시아 및 그리스 정교회로 개종하며 그 분야 음악을 연구하게 되었고 그 성과를 탈리스 스콜라스와 공동작업을 통해 이 판으로 내놓게 된 셈이지요. 탈리스 스콜라스는 후에 러시아 정교회의 레퍼토리로 이루어진 음반을 하나 더 녹음하게 됩니다.

3. 탈리스 스콜라스는 무반주 합창단으로 그 명성이 떠르르한데, 그들의 디스코그래피에서 유일하게 이 판에서만 반주를 허용합니다!!! 합창단과 멀리 떨어져 배치된 현악3중주가 들릴듯 말듯 배경음악을 연주하는데, 고대 그리스 시절의 음악 원형을 묘사하려는 작곡가 태브너의 의도가 반영되었다고 보아야겠습니다.


서양 예술의 원류를 고대 그리스 연극에서부터 찾아오려는 움직임을 많은 이들에게서 발견할 수 있는데, 존 태브너도 그러한 이 중 하나로 이 판의 몸통인 '빛의 화상Ikon of light' 역시 종교적인 성스러움의 근본을 '동방'에서 찾으려는 노력의 소산이라 할 수 있겠습니다.

그러다보니 가사 또한 헬라어를 사용하는 바람에 전혀 알아들을 수 없다는 게 문제라면 문제입니다만-_-ㅋ

그 또한 '일부러' 못 알아듣게 하려는 작곡가의 의도로 이해하렵니다. 그나마 끝의 두 작품은 영어로 노래했다는 게 다행이라면 다행.
